At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other. He’s popular and well-adjusted, star of the school soccer team while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private. But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her housekeeping job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers - one they are determined to conceal.
I was going to give this 4 stars since parts of it moved me but in the end I just couldn’t forgive the fact she doesn’t use quotation marks. After a while my brain adjusted but there were still times it made the dialogue more confusing than it needed to be. Additionally, I never really connected or liked the main female character and thought the entire relationship was incredibly toxic. Finally, the ending was anticlimactic to me……perhaps the meant that as a metaphor for life but it left me disappointed. Overall, it’s a decent story about two people over decades of ups and downs.
