The Saints of Swallow Hill

Donna Everhart's latest novel immerses readers in its unique setting—the turpentine camps and pine forests of the American South during the Great Depression. This captivating story of friendship, survival, and three vagabonds' intersecting lives will stay with readers long after turning the final page.

This was a Goodreads Giveaway win. I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did so I kept putting it off and I regret that. I am also embarrassed to say that after living 28 years on the border or North Carolina, I didn't know why it was the "tar heel" state until now. I have come to realize that I love historical fiction. I always end up on Google for hours learning about things I never would have known without these books. This is no different. I also loved how strong and resilient the female characters are in this story, while the story of how racist and patriarchic that time was heartbreaking to read about.
